The Rank System

The 58th Viper Air Wing uses a Rank System in order to maintain discipline. As a rule, all pilots below the rank of another pilot should address the higher ranking pilot as "Sir." The following is a
list of the heirarchy used within the Viper Air Wing:

Major

The rank of Major. The only one authorized to hold this rank is the CAG. The CAG is in command
of the 58th Viper Air Wing, and generally makes the decisions about what goes on.

Captain

The rank of Captain. The only pilots authorized to hold the rank of Captain are Squadron Leaders. Unless you have a billet as acting Squadron Leader, you must be a Captain to be a Squadron Leader and vice versa.

Lieutenant

The rank of Lieutenant. If you are a full lieutenant you are most likely the second in command of a squadron. When the squadron leader is not around you have the authority of rank to mobilize your squadron in an emergency and/or help keep things in order.

Lieutenant Junior Grade

The rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (JG). Pilots who are veteran to the AirWing and have proven themselves in combat but are not going to be placed in command or in second command of a squadron can be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant JG.

Ensign

The rank of Ensign. The lowest rank the 58th offers. This is for either the pilots that have just
joined or don't currently have any other position than pilot. When pilots get enough experience and prove themselves to their superiors they can be upped to Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Chief Petty Officer

The rank of Chief Petty Officer. The only person within the 58th Viper Air Wing that has this rank
is the Chief. Technically lower than all ranks, including Ensign, and therefore the wearer should by all rights refer to everyone as "sir."
