MONITOR:
2370, 7 October
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is; Samuel says, regardless of the condition of my internal clock, his is working quite well.
It's cold sometimes. You wouldn't have any idea, looking down from above; where we are is nearly all forest and grass, a continent of green surrounded by an ocean of snow. In the day, warm. But the moment night falls, it is like being thrown in a fridge. Is that a clichéd comparison? Samuel tells me he is impressed I have retained the cognitive ability to use comparisons at all.
It was, incidentally, Samuel who suggested I start keeping a journal. I'm not entirely sure why. He says a lot of things that are strange to me. Some would say that is, in fact, what makes him Samuel -- I would say what makes him Samuel is his mind and body. Perhaps I am being too literal. I'm told I am a very boring person to speak to. But what would Samuel know about that?
* * *
2370, 29 October
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is; Samuel says he's been counting the days. It feels like barely a week since I last wrote.
This metal floor sucks the heat from things. I'm afraid to go bare-foot in here for fear of getting frostbite. Frostbite: that's something Samuel told me about, something I heard only yesterday. Or was reminded of, I suppose. I do not know. Of course, in here we are isolated from all that cold, and my suit is plenty thick -- but I can't seem to stop shivering. I asked Samuel about that, and he tells me I've got a cold. So if I have a cold, shouldn't we let some heat in? There's a whole desert at our disposal, and the night's not for hours. It is surprising how hot it gets when the sun is out.
In here, at least. I've never been outside. Samuel insists that we put that off for as long as possible, that in my condition I am not ready. But I'm not sure he's right, because it's so much colder in here.
* * *
2370, 3 November
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is. Samuel says he finds my repetition here curious. I told him I was only doing it to make fun of him, but that just puzzled him more. I suppose it isn't that funny.
We are attempting to repair the ship. Samuel knows more about it than I do, so he must direct me. But gradually we are bringing more systems online. Once we get to a certain stage, though -- once we get to a certain stage I am afraid we shall need new parts. And we are hardly in a position to build them. So I do not think we will get her back in the air, my ship. But that's all right. Where would we go?
I do not even know where we are.
* * *
2370, 11 November
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is. I will take his word for it.
There is no food left. It was only mush -- only the mush Samuel explains is not real food but a vitamin-rich substitute meant for long missions spent in deep space (I am paraphrasing), but I have no more of it and I must find a replacement. I must. I will leave the ship tomorrow to find something in the snow. Samuel showed to me some plants that grow here, ones he supposes are edible. Pictures of them. I will find them when I go. He says he does not know if I am strong enough yet, but of course there is no choice.
I am very tired, now. I do not know why. So I will sleep. And tomorrow, the snow.
* * *
2370, 12 November
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is. But I do not care what day it is.
Samuel seemed pleased to see me return. The wilderness outside is all the same -- a hard whiteness, like static. I considered staying out there. I considered dying. I decided against it. Samuel insisted that I come back, and I would not want to disappoint him. When I returned I asked him where the sense lay in staying alive. He said, and I am paraphrasing again, because I found his answer interesting: "What reason do you have to die?"
The berries were dark and cold and tasteless. I think perhaps my sense of smell is gone.
* * *
2370 29 November
Is that the date? I'm told that, yes, it is.
It occurs to me that I have forgotten things. Before the crash, the mission; before the mission, nothing. Oh, amnesia. Amnesia, amnesia. I have said the word over and over until it lost its meaning. Mean-ing. Samuel has concerns about my mental stability. He is a dear thing, Samuel. My quiet faceless friend who knows so many things about frostbites and berries and time. I hope his power supplies will last.
Tomorrow I am to scavenge for more food. My supply is almost done.

Ransom Arceihn

Norway is not as conducive an environment for FREDing as one might expect.
The reason I set that deadline -- considering my appalling record for deadlines in the past -- is because it really is a deadline. If I haven't gotten it done by then, the campaign won't be touched again for a very long time, if at all. October 31 is the last day for several months I'll have any serious time for Freespace.

Relatively big update in the first post. It's coming along.
I'm expecting to get all the missions done on time, but when I set the deadline I neglected to take into account all the post-FREDing business that'll need to be done afterward. So it won't be released by November (SPLAT), but with the most time-consuming part out of the way I won't have to put the project on hold until I've got more time. The biggest thing, really, is the voice acting; I'll put out a call for voice actors come November, assuming I do in fact get the missions done on time.
I'd also like to clarify something: this is absolutely not related to my last two campaigns in any way. Sorry. You'll have to wait a little longer for Sync 2.

Having played both Sync AND Transcend in the last couple days...I must say I'm impressed. (I'm usually quite picky.) I actually had my friends sitting over my shoulder for half of the first one...watching...waiting to see what was going to happen next. When I'd finished Sync they were just in awe. When I'd told 'em that there was another one...they practically begged to see it.
Given your ability for manipulating the engine and bending it to your story's will, I'm to say the least...anxious. I hope it's released soon.

I understand that (I'm not that dumb...), it's just that I was bored one day and opened up the Sync VP in NotePad++ and was reading it for the mission dialogue. When suddenly I spied.. the word "MCv Custodian"!
And "GVCv Khufu"! In the Sync VP!

Haha, that's very peculiar. I'm afraid I've got no explanation for that, I suppose I must have built the mission on one of Homesick's for some bizarre reason.
There's no news as far as this project goes, though, not at the moment. I can't get any more work done on it until a new CVS build is released which'll fix a couple of bugs that make it impossible for me to FRED the next mission.
karajorma
02-22-2007, 09:38 AM
Which problems? Are they already fixed in CVS and you just need a HEAD build?
Ransom Arceihn
02-22-2007, 10:31 AM
The main one is this (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=1269), which as far as I know has been committed, so yeah.
karajorma
02-22-2007, 11:55 AM
Ah. You need a 3.6.9 CVS build. That's a little trickier. I've been trying to stay with the 3.6.9 Official code as much as possible for the BtRL release.
Ask one of the other coders nicely though and it shouldn't take them long to build a recent CVS version for you. If I get time I'll give it a try tonight.

I'm still working on it, on and off. Mostly off. I've been battling with a series of troublesome writer's blocks, motivation issues and a lack of spare time. It'll get done though, one way or the other. I've invested too much time into it to drop it now.

Nothing quite the same in style or quantity as Transcend, but yeah, there are some atmospheric missions. Just finished making one. So, progress.
Incidentally, I mentioned somewhere on the last page that I almost finished the FREDing. That's no longer true, obviously - I've scrapped a lot of the missions, partly because I just wasn't happy with them but mostly because the concept's evolved over its extended development and they didn't really fit anymore.
Just to let you guys know.

Ransom Arceihn
04-28-2008, 08:44 AM
I'm keeping stuff like the title and what this thing is actually about a secret until closer to release.
t Cobra: Keep in mind that percentage refers to the first chapter of the campaign (12 missions or so), not the whole thing. There's three chapters. System Four refers to finishing touches like testing and voice acting and suchlike. Obviously there's plot reasons for the weird names, but yeah, they double as a progress indicator for the whole campaign.

Whoops, missed a post.
Is it cutscened and more intense than Transcend? You should know my point of view from the other thread...
I do know it, and I agree with it. That's the main reason it's taking so much longer to make. There's none of the filler missions that plagued my last two campaigns and I've tried to make sure that there are no missions without both gameplay and story significance.
There are cutscenes, but they're mostly transitional. I've always liked the way Freespace never interrupted the gameplay to show you something, so while I'm making use of the cutscene feature where I think it's necessary I'm also trying to keep that sense of watching everything unfold from inside your cockpit.

I wonder if those shots are available in larger resolution (let's say, 1024x768 or 1280x1024). Some of them would be perfect for a wallpaper.

We demands updates!!
I haven't seen Ransom in several weeks. I hope he didn't get hit by that bus he's always talking about. :nervous:

Here I am!
A new monitor entry and a small progress update have been added to the OP. The campaign's now script-complete. That's more important than it sounds! In the first two acts I wrote the missions as I went, but that didn't go so well for a variety of reasons, so for the third I've written all the scripts before even touching FRED. The writing has always been the slowest part of building this nonsense for me, so progress should be smoother from here. Really, this should always have been my policy. FREDing without a completed script is for sillies.

Nice!

08-20-2009, 06:18 PM
I understand, Ransom. Getting the script done first is comfortable while adding it later can imply serious FREDding changes which are more than capable to delay the release in a scandalous way (personal experience).
Now, a few questions - what can we expect from Project 03? Is it possible to know what the final name of the campaign will be like? :)

Ah-ah! The name is a secret.
As for what you can expect: it's around 33 missions long and is heavily character-centric. Few mods are used. There's also a stronger emphasis on gameplay and mission variety than either Sync or Transcend had. But that, I suppose, is not saying much.

A new CDC? Very nice. :)
What we expect in terms of characterization and environment? When does the campaign take place? Are there any analogies between it and Transcend/Sync?
General Battuta
08-20-2009, 09:27 PM
Can you please stop using that odious term? This isn't the Center for Disease Control, nor is it the Climate Diagnostics Center. We don't know what the campaign is until we play it.
I'd just like to say that after Windmills I'm triply excited for this; not because I believe they'll be related, but your work just seems to be getting more and more brilliant as time goes on.

That makes the campaign a good candidate to be a CDC. Still not 100% sure, of course.

There is no such thing as a CDC; some may be more or less strongly character-driven than FS2 retail, but the difference is one of degree, not of genre.
Mobius
08-20-2009, 11:51 PM
I don't agree, and I wasn't the one who came out with the "character-driven" definition. I think it's quite hard to deny major differences in term of storytelling, characterization and FREDding. You may keep your opinion while I keep mine.
We're going a bit OT here, though.

I'd rather not go into specifics on characterisation or environment at this stage. The campaign takes place in the same year as the monitor entries. There are a few comparisons to be drawn between it and my previous campaigns, but they're mostly tonal. Structure-wise it's closer to traditional FreeSpace.
Sorry if that's cryptic. I don't want to create too many expectations. Suffice to say that while it shares aspects that people liked about my other work, it's not the same kind of campaign.

Thanks. I certainly hope so - it's been four years since Transcend, after all.

May we expect teasers, trailers and mystery threads?

There'll be a trailer when release is imminent. No mystery threads. All pre-release content will be in the OP of this thread.

If you'd like, I may interview you about Project 03. That would mean revealing more about the project, though (or the interview will be too short).
What do you think? :)
Ransom Arceihn
08-22-2009, 08:42 AM
Very tempting, but I think I'll have to decline. Like I said, I don't want to create too many expectations. If this was nearly any other of my planned campaigns I'd be more than happy to talk about it, but I'm afraid I'm going to remain tight-lipped about this one.
Thanks for the offer, though!

Do you mind delaying the interview? Perhaps it'll be possible when the campaign is almost done... :)
Ransom Arceihn

That's a possibility. Certainly there'll be a bit more to talk about by the time the trailer's released. I suppose we'll see.

I'm afraid there's not much to say besides I'm still working on it. The pace is slow for want of free time.
I'm coming up on the next milestone, though, so if time permits there might be an update sooner rather than later.

Beep boop minor update. I finished a pivotal set of missions that have been torturing me for a while. There is a new monitor entry. It is precisely as exciting as the other ones.

It's all right. I ask myself the same thing sometimes.
I just tore down a mission and started it again from scratch for the third time. Maybe that has something to do with it.
