How to get Freespace 2 Multiplayer working
By: MatthewPapa
NOTE: These instructions assume that you have a fresh FS2_Open install or are about to. If you have any previous modifications or campaigns installed and have not installed them correctly there is a good chance that this tutorial may not work properly for you.
Firstly go register a multiplayer account here. (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com) Be sure to write down/remember your multiplayer account information!!
Download/intall FS2_Open if you haven't already. If you have the FS2_Open installer run it again and it will automatically check if you need to update anything.
Your Freespace2\Data folder may already contain a folder called fs2open_pxo.cfg
If so, open it in notepad. It should say this
fs2netd.game-warden.com
12000
If it doesn't either create a new file with that name and text or simply right mouse click and choose to save this file (http://www.game-warden.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg).
If you do not have FS2_Open 3.6.10 (not out at time of writing) you should check your Freespace2\mediavps\Data folder too. There should also be a fs2open_pxo.cfg here which says the same thing as the other one. If you don't have one simply copy the other one to this folder (make sure you copy. You need the file in both folders).
If you are playing with the 3.6.10 media VPs you will not need to do that.
NOTE : If you are using this guide to troubleshoot problems with Battlestar Galactica : Beyond The Red Line, Wing Commander Saga or Starfox : Shadows of Lylat your config file will say something different. DO NOT use the information in this step. The config file you have is more likely to be correct than the information here.
If you are behind a router or firewall you will need to forward port 7808 both UDP and TCP to your computer. It is critical that you do this or other people WILL NOT be able to join or even see your games! They may show up on the site, but people WILL NOT be able to see or join them in the game. Consult your router/firewall documentation for more info on forwarding ports. It will probably look something like this:
http://www.game-warden.com/matthewpapa/multitutorial.gif
IF THIS IS NOT DONE PROPERLY, IT MAY SERIOUSLY DIMINISH YOUR FS2NETD EXPERIENCE!!
Open up Freespace 2 via the launcher by clicking run. Tab over to multiplayer on the choose pilot screen and create a new pilot. It is preferable that the pilot that you create be the same name as your account name that you created earlier (avoids some confusion for new people.)
Go to Freespace 2 preferences now and then go to the sub-tab "multi preferences." Select PXO and then type in your multiplayer username and password (the one you registered in step 1.)
http://www.game-warden.com/matthewpapa/launcher4.jpg
You can safely leave the "squadron" field blank.
Pilot, you are now qualified to fly FS2NetD! Good luck. Click on the main door to host or join your first multiplayer game!
Okay. Now for a few notes and comments.
If you are getting the message "you have hacked tables" it is because you aren't using the 3.6.10 official media VPs. At time of writing these aren't actually out yet so the only choice is to run with only FS2 data (no media VPs) or simply put up with the message until the release.
Valid multiplayer missions (ones that cound on your score) File1 (http://www.game-warden.com/missions1.zip). File2 (http://www.game-warden.com/missions2.zip). Voices (http://www.game-warden.com/voice.zip) (optional)
If you installed using the online SCP installer you'll probably already have these (They'll be in multi-mission-pack.vp and multi-voice-pack.vp so if you have those files don't bother downloading these).

karajorma
02-26-2005, 07:41 PM
No but when you post people often wish they had them
Anyway one thing about this FAQ. I don't think it's such a good idea to tell people to overwrite FS2.exe with Tom's New Build. The problem is that some people can't run FS2_Open which means that once the retail version is gone they've got no way to see the cutscenes. Better to just rename whichever build you use less often

But, Cobra it is his mind, he can think whatever he wants and wish whatever he wants to wish about. So leave him alone about it, if you keep acting like that no one will want to play FS2 online with you.

Just because I said that doesn't particularly mean i'm a noob that runs into other enemes. I just thought it would been cool in a particular mission where you have no weapons and your required to catch up behind Shivan and other ships and ran into them to destroy them.

Ok, this is getting irritating.
Whenever I join a game, I always start out:
1. With every subsystem at 6%, except engines, which are 15% (Whoo T_T')
2. Unable to fire
3. Unable to use targetting.
4. Unable to see anything in sensors
5. Unable to go past 25 speed, Unless I use Afterburners which work perfectly
6. Crashing whenever I press "respawn"
Can anyone help me out here?

3.6.5 is not really multiplayer compatible. for your problem with Tom's build, it won't work if you have any media VP's in your fs2 folder.

which ones should i dump plz, those are the ones I got at the moment:
mv_core.vp
root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
* i removed mv_core.vp after comparing the files with karajorma FAQ but still the same, crashing everytime :nervous:
* deleted all, reinstalled from Matthewpapa's Full Game zip (675 megabytes), removed all flags as i kept getting errors, then seems to work smooth, no table hack msg, no crashs, but everytime I start a game I instantly jump :(
*ok finally seems to work, created a new pilots & everything seems fine. Just gotta find someone to play with now :biggrin1:

funny? no. This FAQ has worked for 99% of the people that have folllowed it. Some things to try:
Remove MV_Music.vp from the freespace2 directory
When you are following the FAQ, make sure you start with a fresh install
StormRider
10-24-2005, 07:48 PM
All right I am still getting hack file when logging in to FS2NetD. I have a fresh install and installed the tables files cant find a MV_Music.vp file at all. I am useing the FS2Open_3_6-Installer. Have tryed removeing mv_speffects.vp file mv_core_a.vp and the mv_models.vp. any thing I may have mist?
Foxer
10-25-2005, 09:46 PM
I'm not quite sure, but it can be cause by some FS2Open 3.6 files called: ilut.dll, ilu.dll, devil.dll (like in my own case). I have got "hack file" untill I deleted those 3 files, uninstall FS2Open 3.6 and then install FS2Open release in 3.6.7 version (the most stable release I ever played  ). 3.6.7 version don't required this 3 dll files so there is no problem .
Best when you install 3.6.7 (+Launcher 5.3) just after fresh install of FS2. Now it runs great!

I have the original retail FS2, how do I get it to play multi on this new server??
karajorma
10-29-2005, 08:16 AM
Original retail expects to find PXO. The only ways to play online are with FS2_open or Tom's Old Build.
[dw]-hunter
11-08-2005, 03:14 AM
Make sure your retail version ISNT 1.2. It must be version 1.0 inorder for the tables to not show up as hacked, if thats what u got, Ask someone for 1.0 tables. :pimp:

Hi there,
I just recently got Freespace 2 and rediscovered that great world (only had the demo before, it came with my joystick). I found FS2 open, and I now run the 3.6.7 build.
I would love to go online, but since the server is (was) kind of broken, it was impossible. Good news is, it's going back up at the same time I get here (I bring luck, people :)).
However when I try to connect it always says I have hacked tables. I do use the tables provided in this topic, but it's no good. How can I get them right? Is it possible with 3.6.7 to not have hacked tables?

Ok, here are the instructions to get a validation email sent to your account if you did not get one earlier when the server was down
make the changes to the following link, put the link in your address bar, and click enter
[url]http://freespaceserver.cjb.net/fs2netd/main.php?area=register&mode=resend&user=PUTYOURUSERNAMEHERE
this should resend your validation email to the address you registered with

Yes, I am trying to register as well, but I am not receiving the e-mail to complete the process. I must have tried registering 10 times before I came to this forum and realized it wasn't just me. EDIT: Does the fact that the name "Master Stinger" has a space instead of an underscore create a problem during the signing-in process? Also, please note, MatthewPapa, that I have tried what you said about pasting that link into the address bar, but I am still getting no validation e-mail. I've tried it three times and it's been 10 minutes since my last attempt. Maybe I need to wait longer? Anyway, if I do get it within the hour, I will let you know in this thread. I followed the instructions, and it seems to work perfectly. However, no one ever seems to be on! Is this a firewall issue? (I have all the ports forwarded like it said.) So far, only one person has ever been on. Is this an issue with my computer or does no one really play?

It's probably that no one is playing when you tried. Friday to Sunday at night are generally the best time to find people playing. The irony is of course that not many people play cause they go online and see that not many people are playing.
Judging from the number of posts I'm seeing about not getting the email from the server with the activation link there are a whole bunch of people who want to play. :)

Hey guys, Im new to FS2 Online, but Ive been playing Freespace ever since FS1 was out (it came as a free game with a friend of mines copy of WIndows 98 I think, hooked ever since :D). I discovered the SCP a while back, and I am currently using the 3.6.7 build. When I go to join a multiplayer game, there are no game servers up and running, am I doing something wrong or is it just that there are no servers. I have also registered an account and have the mulitplayer config file. Sorry if this is a newbie question.
From the looks of all the other threads, it seems there has been a lot of effort to get to this point, and thanks to all those who kept this game alive.

It's probably just that there are no servers up at the moment. The multiplayer community is quite small at the moment. If you suggest a time to play you're more likely to find other players than simply wandering online hoping to see some.

I'd like to add something, if it hasn't been said before; if you can't seem to see ANY game on IP or FS2NetD, try forcing the port to one of the two that you opened up on your router. Go to the Network tab in the launcher, and go down to "Force Port" - there should be a box with a zero in it. Put in one of the ports and try that :)
karajorma

While we're talking ports can anyone tell me what port 7117 is actually for? I've grepped the code and run an ethereal trace while playing on FS2NetD and I haven't seen shit.

Good lord,
I'm extremely impressed with the amount of work and fervor FS2ers have applied to keeping their games active. We should all be so zealous in every aspect of our lives. If anyone feels like playing a game right now, I've already got one up. Name's Vermillion, I'm looking to see what everyone has learned over the years of playing freespace. I also have an idea for another squadwar, how many active members do you think freespace has total?

fox, here's my tip on trying to getting the verification email. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,41508.msg863061.html#msg863061)
At the immediate moment of this post, the fs2netd server happens to be down, so it is not worth pulling your hair out to try to connect at the moment. Fyi, you can now check the status of the fs2netd here. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42138.msg859904.html#msg859904)
Now, when the "FS2NetD web site via ip" entry shows a status of "Online", you'll definitely need the config file. Just in case you don't have the cfg file, you can always get the latest version here:

You've got two options when it comes to multi...
1. When the FS2NETD service is online, you just fire-up FS2, make sure that the box for PXO is checked in multi options, and go through the bay doors.
(Fyi, you can check the status of the fs2netd here. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42138.msg859904.html#msg859904))
2. When FS2NETD is not running, you can still join a game by ip. A lot of fs2-ers are posting their instant message ids and the irc channels that they can be found in over on the multiplayer forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=135.0), so check that out.

FS2NetD will hopefully be fully functional tomorrow. It's partially setup right now, but it is not in a very usable state and remains firewalled until it's ready. Most of the day has been spent on DNS and mail server issues (which should get rid of the spam filter problems that everyone has) so I haven't had time to get FS2NetD up and running too like I had wanted.
It is installed, and about 90% setup, and the DNS changes should fully propagate in the next 12 hours or so. The website still needs to be reconfigured, which will likely wait until later tomorrow, but actually playing games may be working in the next few hours or so (assuming I don't hit any database issues).
Oh and the server IP will now be 64.92.160.250, or if you are using a very recent FSO build (such as http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/willrobinson/gamma_test.rar) you can just use fs2netd.game-warden.com instead of the IP.

couldnt you just edit the config file with the correct ip?
Or will that not work?Yes, that will. The advantage of specifying the domain name (available in builds gamma and above only!) is that - should the ip address ever change - you will not need to scratch your head as to why you can't connect.

Don't know how well it will all work, but give it try now. Don't use the "fs2netd.game-warden.com" addres, but the IP instead, since the IP changed earlier today and it may be wrong for you and appear to fail when it's actually working.
Let me know how it works out for everyone.
Oh and just a reminder that the website for creating new accounts or checking pilot/server status is still non-functional. But if you already have an account created then you should be able to get on a play a game, or a few, until the rest of the config is done.

As for question #2, lately I've been trying to run as a standalone multiplayer host, and have had some stability problems with standalone. Most of the time, it's when a client has commited to a mission that things seem to go down hill. My suggestion: try standalone. Try it with friends where you're all using the same version. If it crashes, create a bug report in the mantis bug tracker (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/) and give the developers as much information on the problem as you can.
FS2NetD will totally rock when we have solid standalone server support. If anyone is interested in running or connecting to standalones for the purpose of trying to identify any bugs in them, please let me know - I'd like to give the developers as much helpful info as we can on problems that may be out there.

The reason you're seeing no servers is probably simply that no one is running one at the moment. As you might have noticed from this thread FS2NetD only just came back up recently.
Say when you might be available for a game and I'm sure there are people who'd be willing to play.

Taylor needs all of the help we can give him - he's trying to go through and nail any and all issues, but he's at a severe disadvantage; he's running linux (which is actually by no means a disadvantage ), but the standalone mode only works in windows. So his bug-fixing is very reliant on the feedback that we windows users can give him through mantis. Thanks for digging a lot up already, kara. Taylor said that he's got some recent fixes that will go onto CVS in a few days; then he'll make another test build that we can play around with.

Note: The oeb build and even 3.6.9 RC7 do not support having a domain name within your fs2open_pxo.cfg – at the moment, only a test gamma build has that support at the moment. The official release of 3.6.9 will include that feature as well, but until then you’ll want to use http://www.game-warden.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg for your multi config file.
I hate to send you in another direction, but I would recommend downloading 3.6.9 RC7 if you have something older. The net code in it has many improvements, which are not compatible for multiplay with other builds such as oeb or even 3.6.7, so when I create a game on FS2NetD I tend to call them things like “Martellato’s game (3.6.9 RC7 only)”. (Though in the future, people will only see games hosted with the same build as their’s through FS2NetD).
Do you have a FS2NetD account? If not, make sure to create one here and enter that info in the Multi config screen within FS2. http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/

Ok someone might want to update the register link in the instructions unless it has been done since last night.
I can give you one bug on the standalone. It crashes real quick if you have too many missions in your mission directory.

I have a FS2NetD, if you mean an older computer then i don't I have an E6300 and 7600GS....Hi mexxa, I'm not quite sure I understood what you meant by this.
I'm pretty sure I have oeb at the moment and when I said I added the ip by address I mean when you hit F2 whilst browsing and add an IP. And yes I have the info into the setup....But, I did understand that part. Here's the deal. Ok, so you're using oeb. You don't want to add the i.p. address (64.92.160.250) for FS2NetD to the i.p. addresses in the multi config tab. That spot is only for listing i.p.s of individual games over tcp/ip.
FS2NetD works differently. And you designate how your FS2 should connect to it in a different place. Namely, you need to download http://www.game-warden.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg, and save it in your FreeSpace2\data\ folder.
Aside: Kara, I hope I didn't make it sound like I thought you didn't know taylor well enough to know his setup... I got a little confusing while I was trying to address both you and everyone in the same post, and hint at why it's so important that people report bugs onto mantis. OK I have tried and tried to get a server working. I have tried both a standalone and a regular server on 3 different machines. Disabled anti-virus, firewall, port scanned to make sure 7117 and 7808 were open but still nothing. I can see the server over my local network but as soon as I go to dial up to see if it shows up on the internet there are no servers in the list. I had 3 set up at the same time (2 on my lan and one on dial up) none showed. I don't think it is anything I am doing wrong and I have run servers before. Is there anyone that can see a server?
taylor
09-25-2006, 11:43 PM
@FUBAR-BDHR:
It works, I've seen my own servers as being available during testing (when I didn't actually want them to show up :)).
In fact there are 3 servers showing right now, 2 of them from you it would appear, though on different IPs. If you still don't seen them then let me know what builds are you running (we did actually change FSO to return to retail compatibility, which means that it's games will not show to older builds). If you don't see anything from in the game itself then just check http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/?area=activegames and it will show you any active servers.
Oh and you don't need anything but port 7808. Port 7117 is a non-default port and anyone using that (or any other non-default port without very good reason) deserves a kick in the head.

I'm not sure which build you are running, but the standalone server is in a very sad state at the moment. Karajorma and I have been working on that (and Martellato has been brave enough to have a go at testing it all), but those changes are just for FSO and though OEB wouldn't suffer from all of the problems (since some were strictly FSO related), it would suffer from quite a few of them.

You're running OEB then. Not really any help I can offer in that case. It's going to have the same retail and FS2NetD bugs that FSO does (or rather, did), but it doesn't get all of the fixes. You'll have to report the problems to Tom and get them addressed that way.

I know of another potential online setup issue. If you are running NAV 2005 or later you need to go into Internet worm protection and allow FS2. I'm not talking about the firewall here but the anti-virus software itself. I know it effects hosting but I don't know about playing.
Just thought I'd add that while I was bored waiting on players.

I have an issue trying to see games, I have the latest build as above installed, the fs2open_pxo.cfg in my data and mediavps/data folder. I can connect to FS2NET no problem, but I cannot see any games, and a friend I was trying to play with could not see the game I was hosting. He could see other games in the in game lobby that I could not. I've forwarded the correct ports on my router, put myself in my DMZ, and dropped my firewall, still with no joy seeing games or having my hosted game seen. This is really frustrating me as I've been trying now for several hours with no joy :(
Any help would really be appreciated.
- Edit: I think I have it working now, I noticed for some reason my stupid arse had set up a local port in the launcher mirroring the port I had opened in my router, thinking it was needed, I removed this from the launcher options and a game popped up in my list. I feel rather silly now :p
Hoping to have a game with some of the (hopefully friendly) locals soon, and also looking forward with baited breath to the Beyond The Redline mod :shaking:
-Edit: Tried it today with my friend, no joy again. I can't see his game, and he can't see mine, but he could see another game that was up. Do I have to have the port forced in the launcher to the port I opened in my router? It seems to want to do this every time I start the launcher, even though I removed the port from the field and clicked "apply".

I added a minor edit to warn people using the mediavps to also add a copy to mediavps\Data\ as well. We've had a few posts recently from people who got log on errors because the config file in the media VPs was overriding the one in data.
While I'm at it can we get the config file to point at fs2net.game-warden.com rather than a specific IP address? It might cause some minor problems for the Tom's Build people if they try to use it but they can simply go back to the old one.

Well at this time of day it's not unusual for there to not be any games. Got to http://fs2netd.game-warden.com and see if there are any games listed. Even if there are it doesn't mean they are running a compatable version. If there are games showing and you don't see any start a game and see if it shows up on the server list.
Scratch all that I see your game up so it looks like it's working. I'm on the wrong computer to try tp join right now.

Well. Seems I have a bit of a problem. Every time I try to enter multiplayer (select pilot and click select) it ctd. I ran debug, I think the problem is that it cannot parse some tables. The error generated was "Cannot parse amor.tbl!"
Such table files do not exist in the tbls directory. Its empty. So I thought I'd download the table files from the front page of this faq. It still can't parse armor.tbl as it doesn't seem to exist. Any idea where I can get the rest of em?
SCRIPTING: Beginning main hook parse sequence....
Wokka! Error opening file (scripting.tbl)!
Unable to parse scripting.tbl! Code = 5.
Thats one such error that the debug dump gave me.
Alright, I seem to have fixed it.
I have a .iso of the 3 CDs for FS2. Seems running my regular, non-open version made the CD unfindable for the game. (They are in 2 different folders on the same drive. Seems the table files are stored on the CDs, rather then on the HD. Still would like to get the rest of the .tbl files though.
karajorma
11-11-2006, 09:00 PM
If you're playing FS2 and are accessing armor.tbl you've fucked up the install somehow. That's not a retail table. Only SCP builds have it and as far as I know it isn't used in the standard media VPs.
You shouldn't have any tables in any folder FS2 is accessing when you play online unless you're playing a mod online. And I very much doubt anything that uses a scripting.tbl has even been released (unless nukemod uses one)
Wanderer
11-11-2006, 10:02 PM
Those are just warnings that game didnt find the optional table files, like armor or scripting. Nothing to worry about. Check the last lines of the debug spew..

Well if I am thinking correctly that was probably my standalone server. Did it have BDHR in the title? Don't know why you couldn't see it but it's not entirely stable. Also if you see a game and don't see it online check FS2NetD again. It takes a couple of minutes to update sometimes and that was about the time I shut my server down.

hi! i just signed up monday and plyed a lil bit with my friend (tornado) and i was wondering while reading this thread that if we use the 3_6_9 build(whitout the 7.9) we could have issues trying to join your servers (not that i tried that munch yet, aint seen no server except ours ^^;;
oh and.. for the 3 joined files (2 tables thingy and the sound one) in th first thread, where do you extract them
oh and before i forget.. will there be issues if i patched freespace 2 (1.2) ?
karajorma
11-22-2006, 07:14 PM
1) Patching FS2 is a good thing. You shouldn't play with an unpatched version if you can avoid it.
2) You need RC 7.8 or above to see most of the servers in use. If you have anything else you'll only see servers run on older versions of the game. Most of the multi community use something compatible with 7.8 so you will have problems with seeing their games otherwise.
3) Which files?
SunSlayer
11-22-2006, 08:38 PM
Valid multiplayer missions (ones that cound on your score) File1 (http://www.game-warden.com/missions1.zip). File2 (http://www.game-warden.com/missions2.zip). Voices (http://www.game-warden.com/voice.zip) (optional)
those files

ah crud, i messed up badly, i found the answer of my question, tornado is asking the following:
Why do the original missions don't count toward stats? And is there a way to validate them so that they count? Because when I play, only the ones I downloaded "Valid multiplayer missions (ones that cound on your score) File1. File2. Voices (optional)" give me points and update my stats

That is odd. Did you configure your firewall correctly?
Do you have both software and hardware firewalls? Cause I've seen that cause problems if the software firewall doesn't have a rule configured for port 7808.
The other possibility is that you were seeing games by the 303 squadron. I believe they still use FSO 3.6.7 and thus would be invisible for you.
FF-Darkhalf
11-27-2006, 06:11 PM
I can confirm that 303 games can't be seen as they use older builds same as SOR ones :blah: Furthermore some random ppl seem to use some 'invisible' builds as well  However all rather newer pilots tend to use new builds and should be visible to u. A good way of meeting with someone to play is by joining the btrl irc chat and ask or add up some of the active ppl on msn / icq.
I know it ain't easy to get someone to play with, hopefully ppl will all switch to the newest build once it's 'rdy' :cool1:

Ok my router is a Linksys just like the one in the pic but I never set and port restrictions on it at all, I have all ports open, I use a separate port closer on the computer itself instead of anything built into a hardware device LOL.
So its not that.
I didn't see anything saying 303, so it may or may not have been them. I have the following launchers ( only one installed) I have rc7dpt 9, and FS2 open 3_6_9 that you linked me to. And the Free space open setup exe file from the website

I had that error for a while, I tried everything until I finally got it working. I don't know if this is exactly what fixes it but: go into "Network" in the FS2_open launcher. At the bottom of the Network tab you'll see a small window saying, "force local port," just type 7808 in there and it may work after that. I certainly have no idea what technical reason it has for making it work, but like I said, it worked for me.

I'm having a few problems right now, hoping someone will help out.
I had to reinstall my game after I kinda screwed it up (no explanation is really needed :P). After uninstalling, deleting the folders, and cleaning the registry, i did a full install of the game, and did everything else as shown in the first post of this thread. Yet when i click run in the launcher, it loads for a second, and then nothing. Absolutely nothing happens. I just stare at that launcher, and it stares right back at me, mocking me. What's happening?
Btw, I already uninstalled and reinstalled three times, to no avail.

You did reboot after the uninstall and before installing right? I know it's a stupid question but you never know. Also did you try running retail FS2 1.2 before installing FS2_Open to see if it works? Did you browse and select the latest version before you hit run in the launcher? Never tried it to see what would happen if you didn't. Try the debug version to see if you get an error. Other than that I have no idea.
