What is this?
This project is a fan made game that runs on the FreeSpace_Open engine. It is not for any console system, and we are not affiliated by Nintendo, Argonaut Software, Namco, Q-Games, or anyone else terribly important.
Do go on...
To play it, all you will need is a fairly recent computer system. Exact system requirements aren't set yet, but they shouldn't be that bad. It is our hope that you will not need FreeSpace 2 installed to play, the final outcome should be a stand alone game.
So what's going to be in it?
A great many things...
* Lots of playable craft, including 3 different Arwings
* Weapons galore
* Enemies, both new and old
* Space and ground based missions
* A deep storyline
* Multiplayer
* And probably more!
When does the story take place?
The story takes place between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures. Yes, there is content from Assault, but there are good reasons for that.
Will we see Andross?
No. Next question.
Is it going to be just like Star Fox?
No. Star Fox is more of an arcade shooter, while Freespace is a simulation shooter. While the SCP allows us to do many awesome things, we won't be able to get it just like the original games.
Why is SoL a special game among the FS2_open games?
SoL is ment to push the engine to it's limits, using the most recent features the engine has and will get.
We're using everything we can to make sure SoL is always one of the most advanced games based on Freespace 2.
When is it coming out?
It will be done when it is done. We're doing this in our own and for zero money, so that's the best we can give you.
That being said, we're trying our best to get a demo done for people to try. When that comes out is another bunch of wonderful question dodging. (We're working on it.)
Will this run on a Mac or on Linux?
The engine is cross platform, so should run on any major platform.
What is the high-end package?
The high-end pack is ment for users with real high-end machines only. It features extremely high-res textures for some models and might feature some more complex models.
It's gernerally stuff, we decided to remove from the main game, as the visual improvements do not justify the performance loss on most PCs.
You need a 512 MB gfx card to use this pack.
Your link to the FS_open file seems to be non-existant.

Hmmm, seriously, any projected release date of this mod? I really like the looks of it....but I'm not sure whether to invest in Freespace 2 or not.
Also, have you guys considered modding a different game to fit a Star Fox theme? A game such as Battlefield 1942 or Star Wars Battlefront?
Sure. 2006-2007 sound good? Maybe 2008 at the latest. We can't get more exact than that I'm afraid. ;) They take quite a while to do. There's a few ones that have been in progress for 5 years, so I wouldn't expect to see a ton for awhile.
If you are interested in FS2, it's generally considered abandonware, so there are places you can find it...
But the end goal is to make it a totally stand-alone game, so you wouldn't need to get FS2.
And we're pretty much limited to FS2 'round here, so a no go on those other games.

We could release a demo, but not anytime soon. But if we release a demo, it it will probably come out this year.
And I'm sure this project won't be dropped. I enjoy working on it. And almost all members are pretty productive (where's Kuruma?). :)

would you need Freespace 2 for the demo? Or would it be stand-alone?
I'm pretty sure you'll need Freespace 2. But if some other stand-alone mods (like The Babylon Project) lend us some stuff we might be able to make it stand-alone.
Fox McCloud
02-12-2005, 08:57 PM

yeah, you can get it on this very forums, but I don't have DSL or cable...and it'd take literally forever to download the 1.5 gig game. Now before you go ridiculing me about not getting DSL or thinking I'm crazy, let me explain; Where I live (yes, it's in the US) we are not ABLE to get DSL/Cable out here....only 56K/Satellite (which is too much for a not so great speed.) So....we're stuck with 56K, unless Spring lives up to what they said earlier.....they said that *supposedly* we would be able to get Spring DSL pretty soon....heh....yeah right!

It this becomes a stand-alone version, it will be far smaller.
Probably more around 200-300MB, bur perhaps more.
With the last pre-alpha pack + some of my new things, we're @ ~50 MB.
But I've worked on the starmap. As soon as it is complete I can (and will) create Command Briefing animations. And that will add at least 50 Mb. Probably more.
It's too early to think about this, but we could put optional stuff into seperate files for dl.

Well, technically yeah, but that's just the engine, nothing else.
You'd want to either find the ISOs, or download it from HOTU. The HOTU version is lacking a few (hundred) files, but still works. Karajorma has a guide to upgrading the HOTU version to a full version, just entails quite a bit of downloading.

Start here (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150)
Then go here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/hotu.html) for details on what to do next.
If you have Bit Torrent
There is also a bit torrent of the full game available from here (http://prototype24.ath.cx:6969/index.html?filter=Games). That's probably the best way to get the game but you have to be using BitTorrent already obviously.

Well, we thought about a demo, but we're not sure yet. Anyway, it would take a long time until we're ready to release something...
It's more about a massive media release to get some more people into the team. Right now the mod is pretty much underrated in the FS2 community.
Maybe some people saw the potential when we released the first trailer with the tossed landscape, but since then we didn't release anything really stunning anymore.
If you know a modeller or a 2d artist, you should ask them to visit this site.

Of the recent screenshots I have seen, they are shear awesomeness! Kudos to you.
Hi, I've been lurking for a bit...
First, it seems to me at least, that you are violating Nintendo's intelectual property. I woudn't want you guys to be sued. What you do is too kewl.
On the otherhand, if you can legally use the Nintendo characters... have you considered approching Nintendo about porting the game to the Nintendo Revolution? I'd love to try playing that free-range combat with the freehand controller!
Technically, anyone using the Star Fox characters in any unauthorized way is violating their intellectual property, that would cover fan art and fan fic stuff too.
We're not claiming this stuff is ours, and we acknowledge that the characters we use are someone else's property (though I have to put up a notice saying that somewhere :nervous: ). We hope that Nintendo doesn't mind what we are doing, we're not trying to compete with them.
As for the Rev thing, we'll... I don't think it'll happen. I think they'd do a better job than us (but just by a bit ;)). We're just like 10 guys doing this in our free time, while they have a ton more people and do it all day.
DaBrain
12-22-2005, 12:23 AM
It's hard to create a tribute for a game series if you create a totally unrelated game isn't it? ;)
Of course we've discussed this issue several times. I think Nintendo probably has the right to tell us to put the site down and stop developing it.
But why should they?
The FS2 community is small. The FS2 players aren't exactly Nintendos target group. Most of them probably don't even know Starfox. They will not buy less Starfox games because of the mod, cause they probably won't buy one anyway. At the best rate, we might even get some of them interested in the franchise.
To be honest I fear they're not even thinking about this, cause they probably don't care, or don't even now our project.
I don't think we'll ever be possible to port the game to a console. Appart from the needed code changes (we do not have a coder...), we'd have to alter the whole content.
And to be realistic, we couldn't release it anyway. How should be contribute it. The only possible way would be to ask Nintendo to include it on a demo disc, or something like that.
A commercial contribution is prohibited by the license of the FS2 open source code.
You shouldn't worry too much about this matter. ;)
AqueousShadow
12-22-2005, 12:49 AM
Yea, none of this really matters anyway. The real focus here is FSO, and the capabilities of the SCP. Only with those would we have the ability to modify it as we have. Star Fox is just the universe we're using, just as much as anyone else MODs for other science fiction or fantasy games or whatever.
It's a tribute. It's a MOD. It's not commercial. And I highly doubt we'll ever have anything to do with Nintendo beyond a C&D letter.
DaBrain
12-22-2005, 09:26 PM
Maybe Volition could sue us. If they consider this project as ad for Starfox, they probably could try it.

That's pretty much it. ;)
It's not that we don't want to give a release date. We simply can't, cause we don't know it for sure.
Of course we can estimate the time to the release, but in the end, it could take a few months more when a member doesn't have time for a while, a voice actor disappears, whatever.
So estimates are dangerous and can upset the community. We will inform you when we're close to release, but even then, I'd rather like to avoid a public release date (there will be an internal one though).

What the heck is Cortex Command? Another star fox game? or something else?
No, but it didn't stop someone from coding a buggy arwing into it. It's something I've been watching for some time; it's a side-scrolling RTS/Contra-style shooter. Check it out if you wish, it's about as done as Duke Nukem Forever (or less) so don't expect much especially from the "full" version. Full version is just there as an incentive based donation system. It's not worth twenty bucks by any standard, at least not yet. But I have a weakness for small game makers, so I guess I'll stick around until Cortex is finally finished or fails. Of course I'll do the same with this, I've been looking for a good starfighter game since the days of Star Wars TIE Fighter (it's been a while).
While I've never been impressed by Star Fox games since I picked up PC gaming this has definitely caught my eye. Especially after that video I saw that reminded me so much of unrailroaded yet organized games like TIE Fighter. Here's to hoping that this will finally put those oldies but goodies into retirement and that fresh blood will finally be spilt among the stars.
Of course this means I've got to check out other MODs and total conversions to FreeSpace.

A quick question...
are there going to be any special patch's or mods recurred to play SOL when it come's to FreeSpace 2? to download relation with the relese?
Scourge of Ages
07-29-2008, 05:11 AM
If I'm correct, and I am, this is a total-conversion mod. A single installation file that will install the specially modified version of Freespace 2 and everything you need to play SOL. If it's anything like the others, it should be between 500Mb and 3Gb.
If I'm wrong (and I'm not :) somebody please correct me.
i hope the system specs will be low enough for me.hopefully it is below 1 GB RAM
DaBrain
09-07-2008, 11:26 PM
SoL will run on a (very) wide range of systems.
Of cource, the more you've got, the better it will look, but even without shaders, it still looks pretty good.
1 GB ram or more would be nice, but it probably won't be an requirement.
Unless you use Windows Vista, which uses more ram for the OS, so there is less for the game left.
Vista?ooooh, thats very bad for me,i dont think i can downgrade to XP yet so i guess ill be playing on low settings.oh by the way, when i play FS2 i play on the highest graphics settings and it still runs pretty smoothly

Um, this might be a stupid question, but by ' ground missions' did they mean on foot or with landmasters? It wouldn't be to bad a few parts for on foot, but one of the big mistakes nintendo made with the later games was shifting the main focus (space flight) to ideas that they just THOUGHT would work.... I'm rambling, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I really hope that not to much of the game is non arwing related combat.

10-05-2008, 09:01 PM
Also, another couple of questions out there,
How will communication be handled in the game, will it support its own voice chat? friend system? chat box? mail system? etc. Or will players have to find someother way such as team speak if they want to recreate the starfox visual radio system. Also that brings this up, will this game be using the 'visual radio'? Or what?
Also, basic control question, is the game being built to some standard set up for play, I doubt you'd leave us out there and MAKE us play with a certain setup, but is the game being focused to keyboard, key and mouse, joystick, game pad, etc.?
DaBrain
10-05-2008, 09:10 PM
A lot of questions... ;)
"Ground mission" only mean missions on planets. Due to the engine limitations, Landmaster missions will most likely not be possible.
In multiplayer there is a voice chat system, but other than that, it's pretty basic.
Your scores in matches will be saved on the FS2Net server, if you register an account there, but there is no friend system or a mail system.
The game is mainly designed for joystick and gamepad, but we're trying to keep it playable with keyboard+mouse as well.
Star Raptor
10-05-2008, 09:15 PM
Love ya man, sounds awesome, hopefully someday you will be able to program landmaster missions or even make a standalone star fox game where they are all landmaster missions, but that raises the question, just because land-land missions are impossible, are underwater ones also impossible?
Edit: You didn't comment on whether the vocal communication in the actual game will be accompanied by visuals of the characters talking. I probably didn't phrase the question right.

Will you be able to Barrel Roll
They said no actually but they are working on it, but you don't have to expect it like the SF 64 Barrel Roll.
What characters from 64 will be in the game?
Unfortunately the whole StarFox Team crashed their ships and died in a library so you'll play as rocky cornerian military. As for Bill and Katt, they vanished in the Black Hole.
Well, I don't know.
Is Andrew still on the Starfox team, in the story?
Hard to say since he has never been.
How about the Blue Marine? Are there going to be any levels with that particular vehicle?
No.

I don't know if they'll want to do much after SOL. they've been working on it for over six years. and i think that's kind of a bit much to ask seeing as they've been doing all of this in their spare time. Not trying to be rude, but i think that's how i would feel if i was working on something and was asked to do more after i finally finished it.

Yeah, I have some pretty good photoshop skills, but I only have microsoft picture it at home, so... yeah, but if you need any help with making textures, then I'll certainly help. Putting the textures on the models, however, is a totally different story.
Also, don't let this get too much attention, or else Nintendon't might do the same thing to you as Microsoft did to Halogen.
And, I was thinking, another FS2 star fox mod would be cool, if you got to be a normal cornarian pilot, and were in engagements with the venomians like in Kitania in Lylat Wars. And you're in a regular cornarian fighter, not an arwing.

Hello there. I'm rather new here, just joined a few seconds ago but I'm a big fan of the SoL production. I've been following it for quite some time now.
I was wondering, if there would be any use of the vehicles such as the Blue Marine or Landmaster at some point in the game. I know it's going to be based on the classic style of just using the Arwing and stuff, but...I think it would be pretty neat if there was a chance of those two vehicles making an appearance. Especially the Blue Marine, because it was only used once in any of the Star Fox titles put together, back in SF64.

That seems to be one of the first questions everybody asks, and the answers are:
No landmaster without a whole lot more work, and may be impossible.
Probably no Blue Marine, as the ones making the game don't really like it. There's nothing stopping you from making one and some missions for it once the game is released though.

Blue Marine was made barely for the classic Water level cliche thing. And frankly, it sucks.
About the Landmaster, i like the SF64 one, and would like to see it in SoL, but SF Assault's was a freaking buggy with a turret. we've nicknamed it the Crap-mobile.
And the arwing is a flying death machine, but i guess you've alterady seen that. On SF64 at least, it can do the job of Bombers, Interceptors and assault fighters at the same time. AND it can Barrel roll.biggrin

This is a game for fans by fans, and I know I cannot wait until the final project. I just hope Nintendo doesn't give you guys any trouble.

If it DOES WELL, then IT STAYS: Plain and simple.
I also think that they realized there mistake on handing out the game to 3rd parties. If this 3DS remake does well, they stated that they were very interested in making a Wii StarFox game. However, they might also make it a Wii U game since thats coming out too. So if it does well, expect in the future to see a Wii or a Wii U - StarFox title.

Well, don't sound TOO enthusiastic about it doing well or anything.... but...
If anything, the series would be put on hold until a demand from fans is high enough for a new game to be made. Then, you will have this fan made game to hold you off until that happens.
However, all of us old fans of SF64, and any new fans the remake will bring in will in fact shoot up the series' popularity and therefore I feel that there will be many more official SF games from Nintendo.

It will be done when it is done. We're doing this in our own and for zero money, so that's the best we can give you.

I've been looking on some other sites and a lot of people have been saying that the arwings look too "static" in game. I would have to agree with them, as the ship does not back when it turns, and the wings are straight out instead of swept back in the S64 arwing.
However I assume these moving and banking things are just limitations of the game engine, or have they been fixed since the last trailer?
Also, Psygonis, could you tell us a little about the difference between the Standard and the Photon lasers? Are they supposed to be the regular and hyper lasers or is this something totally different?

Yes. Exactly like that. If by you mean in the main hall there's an arcade machine sitting in a corner and you can click it. Not from the campaign room.
But instead of being like TDS it's pixel art. Kind of like gradius. Except for up and down. Ok maybe more like......... AERO FIGHTERS.
