• Since we're having an issue with spam and very few people use this website, I've closed Game-Warden to new user registrations. Any FS2, BtRL, SoL, etc questions can be directed to HLP instead.

crash on startup

i just downloaded freespace 2 (took 2 days) and it gave me these nasty error when i started it up:

you need to configure your system through the launcher before playing! the launcher will now be opened

error: freespace2/FRED2 cannot be run from a drive root directory

--

no matter how i open it, launcher, exucutable, startmenu>run, it gives me those two errors in the exact same order!

does anyone know how to fix it?

and should the open launcher crash when i load a mod with a retail build? that kinda puzzles me... a mod should be able to work on the official retail build.....
 
so should open crash when i browse to the build too? i have lots os crash problems..


i have open AL and every thing, even launcher 5.4.
 
Well then I've got no idea what is causing your crash then. You should be getting crashes all the time if you used Turey's installer. Is that the only thing you have done? Or have you added your own mods?
 
welll... lemme see....


i got DEM, but i removed that before installing open.

and i got the uber windows pack from the official 3.6.9 release thread at HLP.
 
A small tip from me ;)

It would be better if you'll install all games on partition D, but progras and documents on C. It's easier to explore your computer.

For example I've got 80 GB HDD.

I've got four partitions.

10 GB for Windows, programs, and documents, 60 GB for Games/music/multimedia 9 GB for GNU/Linux and 1 GB for a SWAP partition
 
moved...now the launcer crashes when i click on it. nothing but "launcher 5.5 has ecountered a problem and needs to close"

im guessing need a different build/launcher that recognizes fs2NetD
 
Wait, you are trying to play this from on a flash drive?

Or you have it installed?


In any case. Did you put the launcher and open exe's into the same folder as the retail launcher and retail exes?

Stop taking wild guesses at what might be the problem and actually state what you've done to get this crash instead.

Post pictures of the contents of your Freespace 2 folder. While you're at it delete the launcher6.ini (and flags.lch if you have it) file before running the launcher again.
 


i didnt have enough time to get the voice and music....

edit: i installed, but i got sparky_hi_fs2.vp and sparky_fs2.vp using a flash drive.

and the error is: AppName: launcher.exe AppVer: 5.5.0.0 ModName: launcher.exe
ModVer: 5.5.0.0 Offset: 0000e67e

Get them then. And make sure you got all of the ones you do have.

And the fact that you cancelled the install halfway through is of vital importance. That should have been in your first error report.
 
actualy...i didnt choose to download the voice and music when it asked me if i wanted to. i never knew those were core files for SCP.
