sure. say...will the media VP's and other enhancements optional or mandatory?

karajorma
02-14-2007, 07:46 PM
The media VPs are not in any way related to any total conversions. They are for FS2 universe mods only.

takashi
02-14-2007, 08:48 PM
phew...i wont have to get a new computer to play.

Taristin
02-14-2007, 10:07 PM
Well.... you might. This game may not be using the media vp's, but the models and maps are as high quality, or higher, than the ones in FS. So...

I dont know what kind of system you have (and this isnt the thread for it anyway)

takashi

yeah. already this is getting off topic.

play freespace 2 to see for yourself.

Thanks a million for that link...I've been looking all over for that. :)

are you a dev, or are you making that up?

Taristin
02-17-2007, 01:05 AM
Open shouldnt crash. If you're having problems getting open to work, go to www.hard-light.net/forums/ go to the Source Code Project forum, and ask for help.

And he's not a dev.

karajorma
02-17-2007, 06:11 AM
and you realy dont get a working copy of open with that link...just retail. open crashes.

YOU don't get a working copy with that link. Pretty much everyone else does.

Nope, not a dev. I was hoping the smiley would get the point across...obviousally, it didn't :P

takashi

all i see is a red "X".

anyway, back to the topic:

judging by the screenshots, this game just might improve on the external view in freespace AND keep the cockpit view that was already there!

Unknown Target
02-17-2007, 09:10 PM
Default Freespace didn't have a cockpit view...
And how could is it improving it? It looks exactly the same (except for SoL's new HUD, or lack of one in some shots).

takashi
02-18-2007, 12:21 AM
it loks alot better than retail's external view. and isnt the HUD viewing from an eyepoint places right on the outer edge of the ships "cockpit"?

Unknown Target
02-18-2007, 01:14 AM
No duh it look better than retail's external view. This mod uses FSOpen, not retail. If you look at other FSO shots, they'll look similarly improved.

And no, that's nowhere even close to what the HUD is. The HUD is a bunch of 2d images on the screen. There's no model associated with it.

takashi
02-18-2007, 01:27 AM
then where does it view from? i'll have to exract a ship from the root vp and check.....

StarSlayer
02-18-2007, 01:33 AM
FS2Open has come a long way from retail:

Unknown Target
02-18-2007, 01:37 AM
then where does it view from? i'll have to exract a ship from the root vp and check.....

It views from the eyepoint in the model, but the default FS2 doesn't draw any models when in cockpit view. All it shows is the HUD.

takashi, maybe you should take the time and actually play Freespace 2/Freespace Open? That'll really help you with more of your "speculation".
And if you have already played it...play it again. Please.

takashi
02-18-2007, 02:06 AM
still working on that crash i get when i open up 3.6.9

so all i get is a retail retail=no SCP=no multi=?no SoL demo?

Unknown Target
02-18-2007, 02:34 AM
Maybe you should ask for help with your FSOpen problem on one of GW's numerous Freespace-related forums? (NOT here on the SoL board, basically.).
Also, from the FAQ at the top of this board:

What is this?

This project is a fan made game that runs on the FreeSpace_Open engine. It is not for any console system, and we are not affiliated by Nintendo, Argonaut Software, Namco, Q-Games, or anyone else terribly important.

Do go on...

To play it, all you will need is a fairly recent computer system. Exact system requirements aren't set yet, but they shouldn't be that bad. It is our hope that you will not need FreeSpace 2 installed to play, the final outcome should be a stand alone game.

AKA you will NOT need FSO to run SoL. I don't see why you are seemingly incapable of distinguishing between retail Freespace, Freespace Open, and SoL.

takashi
02-18-2007, 03:02 AM
maybe its because i put a whole bunch of arwings and HT: models in my ships .tbl and hyper lasers in my weapons.tbl, and made .ANI files of starfox characters? not to mention the various hacks and semi-HTL models...

Unknown Target
02-18-2007, 03:19 AM
Er - that's your content. Just because you can stick your content into a Freespace Open install doesn't mean that Freespace Open is automatically the same as Retail/SoL. Even though SoL may use the same engine as FSO, to be standalone it must have almost 100% original content.
And, here's just a thought - maybe something in all that junk you put in FSO is what's making it crash?

Yarr thread split!

Taristin
02-18-2007, 06:02 AM
IIRC, Takashi's models werent textured. They were colored polies converted to pof. Those will not work properly in FS2, nor FS_Open.

Also, you didnt install the game fully. You stopped it in the middle. Its no body's fault but your own that it isnt working. Do a full install. Then try again. And dont use your own mod content until you have something that works on its own!

Modding 101:

If you don't know or aren't sure of how to mod, DO NOT modify your core folders or install... make a NEW folder to monkey with (or in my case 11 installs - because I CAN!) :D

i dug up the original root files/folders....still crashes. i reinstalled, still crashes.

i saw a similar problem with loading 3.6.9 on the SCP forum...the guy said that it worked when used an older build. im guessing that my computer is toold (1998) to run 3.6.9

StarSlayer
02-18-2007, 06:46 PM
1998? i suggest you stick to FS1, Total Annihilation and Sim City 2000

>>Edit depending on what OS you are running come daylight savings time you clock is going to be messed up, and unfortunately older OS's aren't going to be patched by Bill.

takashi

so does XP and ten RAM memory upgrades count, or does that keep an orderly clock?

Unknown Target
02-18-2007, 07:58 PM
Wow, uh, 1998...?

That's ancient. Good luck getting any game made after 2001 to work, let alone SoL. I don't know about what the team thinks, but i seriously doubt anything that SoL (or anything else from 2000+) makes will run on your machine.

Flamewave
02-18-2007, 11:03 PM
1998

Well there's yer problem!

FS2_Open uses newer fancier graphics stuff than vanilla FS2. Your video card is most likely so far outdated that it won't be able to run it.

...seriously. 1998? It may be time to consider getting something a bit newer. o_O

takashi

-attempts to fix the error-

removed the media vp's...used 3.6.9 debug...still crashed.

reinstalled core files...repeated first step...crashed.

removed all mods and repeated last two steps. crashed.

followed SCP installation tutoral. crashed.

looked for toms old build....nothing.

karajorma
02-19-2007, 12:27 AM
Quite frankly I don't think you can fix this. I don't think there were many PCs in 1998 which had HTL capable graphics cards and that's the bare minimum requirement to run FS2_Open.

takashi
02-19-2007, 12:54 AM
well, finaly found toms old build. i guess i should just use that and forsake the graphical enhancements.

all problems are resolved and the thread is now pointless.

Axem
02-19-2007, 02:02 AM
If you say so.

As a side note, you should probably be aware that Tom's Build is FS2 Retail with some multiplayer enhancements (like the ability to play on FS2NETD), and is not compatible with anything that needs an SCP build.

takashi
02-19-2007, 02:03 AM
k. you can close the thread now.

Unknown Target
02-19-2007, 02:53 AM
I don't see a reason to lock the thread.
And what's the point of using Tom's Old Build to run SCP? You can't even run any SCP content with that exe, you might as well just use vanilla FS2.

takashi
02-19-2007, 03:07 AM
is to get multi working, since that was the original reason i tried to get multi working. then kara told me that a computer like mine couldnt run SCP anyway, so i googled around for a while...few minutes...days, and the problem was solved. but i still do have those .ani files of various starfox characters for my fred-ed missions!

Unknown Target
02-19-2007, 03:41 AM
Multi working for what? No one plays with Tom's Old Build - you won't have anyone to play against.

takashi
02-19-2007, 03:45 AM
you mean you have to match builds?

crap.... so is just me and the one guy who also has a realy old computer.

Unknown Target
02-19-2007, 05:55 AM
You don't have to match builds, but there was a code change awhile ago that broke compatibility with all builds prior to some pre 3.6.9 build (and most defiantly after Tom's Build). So sorry, but you won't be able to play SoL or probably any FS2 multiplayer (pretty much no one uses that EXE AFAIK).

But seriously, 1998? Man, that computer was around before VANILLA FS2. Plop $500 on a new machine and put a $90 vid card in it so you can play some decent games.

Taristin
02-19-2007, 06:42 AM
Tom's build was never even a good choice for multi gamers. It had a ton of errors that it suppressed, so it seemed like there was nothing wrong, but in reality, it was a pile of poo. Thank god they dropped (are dropping) support for it.

takashi
02-19-2007, 05:21 PM
i just bought a 600$ pc... this ones made in 2001. i reinstalled everything (keeping pilots, campaings, and missions on a disk) and i still get the crash when i open up 3.6.9 using launcher 5.5. it wont open unless i run the launcher anyway. all i can use is fred2_open.

Unknown Target
02-19-2007, 05:31 PM
What are the system specs?

And dude, you got totally ripped on that PC.
Just on Dell:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_dimene521?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

For $600 you could've gotten a brand new PC that would be able to run most games, and with a $100 card could've run almost all.

karajorma
02-19-2007, 05:36 PM
Does retail work? Just click on the FS2.exe and see if that works.

takashi
02-19-2007, 09:12 PM
yeah...that works fine. in fact, retail works perfect.

karajorma
02-19-2007, 09:25 PM
Then I think you've probably upgraded to a PC which still can't run FS2. What are the specs for this one?

takashi
02-19-2007, 10:46 PM
radeon 7500 gfx card, on board sound and video, 1 gig of ram, 100 gigs of remaining C drive space, 50 gigs left on the D partiion, 2 gigahurtz processror, windows XP.

Unknown Target
02-19-2007, 11:24 PM
It's hertz...not hurtz. Although that machine will probably still be able to run FSSCP, you did get roasted on that deal.

heh...

I REALLY hope SoL is more userfriendly than FSII.

First of all, i cant run the normal program, because it says FSII cant run in an open root directory (what the heck is that)? The only program that would work was the debug, and i can't play on-line with that, since the above dosent load the autorun. :P

And i'll never forget the time we were attacking a cruiser and I forgot to load any warheads on my bomber. >.<

Will it ever end?

Unknown Target
02-20-2007, 03:29 PM
You were using FSO, correct? Make sure to note that, FS2 and FSO are quite different from a technical POV.
Anyway, where is your game installed? What's the directory path?

Taristin
02-20-2007, 05:00 PM
Open root sounds like he put it directly in his C:\ drive... which is a no no.

FS2 is actually one of the easiest games to get set up and running like this, especially with mods. The fact that so many people seem to f*ck it up scares me :p

Devestator

*begins feeling like a complete idiot*

Well, i did put it in the Program files, but when it didnt work, i moved it to the desktop, which still didn't work.

And i got it from the link on page 1. (That installer takes ages)
