View Full Version : Demo canceled, but no reason to be upset.

We've canceled the demo, but there'll be an release anyway.
The "demo" just got too complex. It's using a lot of content and features two of the most content-heavy missions in the whole game...
So we decided to beef it a bit more up and rename it. Probably something like 'chapter one', 'part one', 'prologue'. It actually covers the first chapter of the story anyway.
You'll have to wait a bit longer, but you'll get a short small game, that is more complete than a demo. ;)

Works for me. :p Long as it (the project) doesn't get cancelled. I found a Halo mod that was shut down after three years in the making.

will we still get multi?

Takashi: Wouldn't be much of a release without it, huh?
I found a Halo mod that was shut down after three years in the making.
Would that be Project Torlan or some other mod I haven't heard of? Though if I recall, Torlan was restarted somewhat recently...

Don't know, but it was an RTS mod for Halo. Nope, not that one.

Ah, that's a shame. Makes sense since they're developing their own Halo RTS though. :/

...In accordance with the prohecy. ;)
...no reason to get upset?....we are not amused
Oh well, seeing how long we waited as is dosen't matter....*sigh*
But thanks for the update anyway. :)

Funny. I came up with this idea a few months ago. xD
As some of you know, I wrote the Star Fox PC section on Arwing Landing, and I was looking through the games and realized... none had ever really been released, they all got delayed or forgotten. "Episodic content would be the way to go!" were my thoughts. I actually didn't think it would apply well to SoL, but, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

No need to rush guys. Just ignore clamorings for anything now and make it the best it can be. If it takes another 1-3 years so be it (long as the team can stay active opposing RL issues).
Not every TC mod needs a demo. :)
I'm more concerned with story and length.

oh well, it'll be really worth it
Hey DaBrain? I have a question. Do you mind if I provide a link to the SoL Beta to the people on the NSider Forums? A lot of people there would really appreciate the link
Thx
And btw
I think it'll be well worth the wait if it'll be better than a demo :D
DaBrain

Well once there is a release, I think you could post a link there.
As long as you clearly explain that this is a fan project.
@Devestator Your signature is a bit too animated... Makes it harder to read the stuff next to it.

Rats, i was getting ready to add Starfox running down the assault corridor.
Aaah well, i'll remove the arwing, and switch off between corridors...but dont tell anyone. ;) :nervous:

I think we would appreciate it if you dropped the corridor run image altogether. It is unnecessarily large.

Would you be satisfied if i just scaled it down? (I'll remove it for now, :( )

last terribly noobish question:
will the system requirements be that of BTRL, or will people with 64mb cards have to set model detail to low when a ground mission comes up?

last terribly noobish question:
Ah if only that were true.

Im surpirsed that after working at Volition you wouldn't be able to figure that one out yourself.
DaBrain

Compared to the BtRL demo, they will be higher. I don't know how much, but the city level will be quite a challange for low-end PCs.
You can tweak it a lot with the model detail slider though.
So if only the city slows your PC down, you can still get around it.
The final versions of both games will be pretty much on one level though, as the texture sizes and the polygon count will probably on eqal levels... and the engine is the same anyway.
Also... we don't plan to release the whole game in chapters. After the chapter one release, there won't be any releases till the full game is complete.
So, it actually is a preview version. We just felt like it was too much to be called 'demo' anymore.

@starslayer: actualy, after only doing tables at volition (fs1, to be more specific), you shouldn't be suprised.
@DaB: thanks for the info.
Okay takashi, unless you have solid concrete, undeniable proof of working at Volition, I'm going to have to ask you to stop claiming you work/worked there.

wait... which one was i?! I STILL DONT KNOW IF YOU GUYS ACCEPTED ME AS A TEXTURER! WILL SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER ME? please i am desperate for a new job other than 2D programming :( (my own sfx games are only 2D)

You know, maybe someday the Ghost of DaveB ( a real Volition employee who is also a HLP forumite) will show up here and lay some smack down on his impudent arse...
Till then I can only dream... :naughty:

I just wanted to inform you, that we're rebuilding the city from the scratch.
That sounds worse than it is. We keep all models and set them up better.
The new city will look better and most likely perform better on low-end systems.
We tried to fix up the current one, but there is still a huge list of things to do to make it work better. It's probably even the faster way to set it up again.

Thanks, I actually feared you guys might not like the idea of it.
I wasn't sure about posting this first too.
The concept is in the works and I guess we'll add a few new things while we're at it.
When you play the level and it runs smooth, keep in mind that Water did most of the optimizations. While I made most of the performance-lowering mistakes... :nervous:

Bleh. Another delay. Why not instead, make one huge delay, saying the first episode will arrive in 2008, and leave lots of leeway for yourselves?

After going through the 'old screenshots' thread I'm starting to like this mod even more :biggrin1:. Under the circumstances I think everyone would prefer a preview rather than a demo. A preview might be a better way to convince the community to help out as well. From what I've seen so far this is going to be one hell of mod

It seems you've been lurking around for quite awhile, so I'm not sure what you mean by "preview." We've had a couple videos and a trailer out. Setting a goal for just a preview would probably end up getting in the way of actually finishing the demo.

If you have access to the forum statistics for Game Warden you'd see my time spent here equates to my post count :p. When I meant preview I was referencing this post

That should explain it. I have seen some of the videos :biggrin1:, not sure about the trailer though.

Oh really? Next time put a smiley on the end of that.
Remember you BARELY passed the test to do effects for me (I'm going with the rainbow beam I made instead of yours, mine looks more like the show while your colors are washed out kinda (what did you do a gradient?) I copy and pasted different beams in a row and it worked...
Anyway...
SoL Team, take as much time as you need. If we don't get a demo or preview who cares? It's the END RESULT that matters! (That, and that it actually gets DONE) :)
