Is Shadows of Lylat primarily a Star Fox game, or a Star Fox mod? The inclusion of on rails seems to make it a lot more like a Star Fox game rather than just a Star Fox mod, which is what I originally thought it was supposed to be. A total conversion? Yes, but still a mod none the less. Just one wholly set in the Star Fox universe.

I guess you could say it's a:
"Stand Alone Mod"
Ergo, it isn't a FULL FLEGED SF game, but it WAS modded off FS2.
It's no longer JUST a mod, but it still started as that. True the Rails have changed FS2's engine a lot, but..... o well :P
Mod, total conversion, game based on a free engine. Call it what you like. :)
The on-rails part of SoL won't be a focus. FS2 is a space sim, so that is our primary focus, but we still want to do neat and things never seen before in FreeSpace (such as the on-rails part). There's lots more we haven't shown you guys yet. :)

Yepp.
Although technically, it's still a mod, as the current version still needs FS2 to run. For now... ;)

So its still having to launch from FS2?
Will it be like that at the final product or will it be a Stand Alone Game using a Open Source Engine?

wait a mo...
Da, does this mean we'll need FS2 to play the demo? Or will it be stand alone? :(

No, don't worry guys. As has been stated before, SoL will be made to run on its own, just like BtrL.

If it runs on it's own though, is it a mod or a standalone Star Fox game? Or, something else entirely?

Originally, you needed FS2 to run mods... SOL is a mod... but now since FS2 has gone open-source, only the components of the game needed to run the mod are included in the standalone file. It's still a mod, but it's standalone because everything you need to run it is included......
You don't need the original FS2 to run it, but it's still technically a mod.
It's kind of an amalgam. Just like BTRL, it's standalone but built off of FS2.

So, like Counter Strike?

I think. Stand-alone Multiplayer Mod.

IF its using an Open Source Engine and doesnt need a another product to run then it is
A STAND ALONE GAME.
Just using the SAME Engine as FS2, Because Mods mean u are Modifying the game/product. Having a Stand alone mod is saying that Rainbow Six is just a STAND ALONE MOD.
Using an Engine and placing ur own textures. THen its a game.

So then, it's a game based on a freeware engine?

So then, it's a game based on a freeware engine?
If you want to be technical then no.
The licensing of the original Freespace 2 engine source code --that Freespace open uses-- does not allow the sale of the engine/game.
So it is free to use, modify and distribute. (thats the engine, I don't know about the FS2 game content)
Freespace Open still retains the Volition copyright notice.
To be a Starfox game would require a license from Nintendo. You should be able to figure the rest.
EDIT: The word free can have two meanings.
Free: no cost
Free: no restrictions on the code.

I know this is a mod and all but:
Does this mod play more like star fox from super nintendo and n64 or does it play more like free space? Or does it fall somewhere in between?
You all have mentioned you have modified the source but I do not know to what extent based on the screen shots.
Thanks for listening.

LOL this is an interesting thread seems to me its a thread of silly questions... cuz all that matters is it a game you get to play made by the nice folks here at Game Warden. So I don't think it needs to be called Stand Alone Mod or anything I was pretty sure its name was Starfox: Shadows of Lylat.
As for your question Rain, i can't full answer it I believe its somewhere in between. But I do know that the Source has been modified alot to adjust for what they want to do with the game. I don't think the whole code has been rewritten or anything but so far they have done a great job.
