I was at college to pick up my college grade text books on how to make video games, when I found inside my "Game Development Essentials" text book to find a DVD Rom with a complete student version of 3D's MAX ver. 9, Maya ver. 8.5 PLE, game design templates and walkthrough videos and even two complete game engines: "Torque" and "Game maker ver. 7"
Though my eyes are on the Unreal engine I have over 2 grand of design programs and engines all paid for by my student loan :*)

That makes alot more sense. I love the Unreal Engine but seriously do you think you will get a engine that costs way more than the total of all the software you have already gotten for school?
I know there is no way that me alone can pay for that engine hence what companies are for but I am only seen one place that offers courses in teaching game development using that engine and it cost ALOT.
Btw where are you going?

Of course my team of Game Designers has the Unreal engine and is going to install it on my computer pretty soon, pretty much everything I have been trying to tell you about getting the Unreal Engine is true, and it wont cost me anything because we are students working on an educational project.
I know what you mean for me all I have to do is meet up with the Game design Bureau or as they like calling themselves "The Dark Side" in my game class and I get an install on the engine. I have nothing to worry about seeing it not HOT. It has been payed more than it has been used, that and I will be using it for my gaming projects. We use Unreal for legal use to better understand how to make games with the engine we do not intend to use it for commercial use meaning making any profit with it because that would be illegal. And good question, I hope to work for someone like Blizzard or Nintendo, if money was no option I dreamed of working with Q Games and meet Dylan found father of Star Fox in person for making 3D graphics possible on a 16 bit system...but that is just a dream in itself.
EDIT: I just installed Maya on my computer, and I must say, its nice to see that interface once again, last time I saw it I made simple structures like a a ball go through a hollow spherical disc. It's a personal Learning addition I found out on the disc but it is a permanent program to use, but still pretty pricey just like the student addition of Adobe Photoshop. I will however get the commercial use version later on, but for now it's more than enough for what I need to make games.
I am however disappointed to find out that 3D's MAX is only a 30 day trial but I have ways of reinstalling it until I get the real one. Best thing is I have a .edu account so what programs that originally cost about a grand only cost me ten to thirty percent less of that of the original price. Other than that everything else is genuine. And money is no object for me, I have a job, pay my taxes, groceries, my bills and tuition, saving up for a grand program by putting in fifty here and a hundred there will get me closer as my determination for needing them as an investment grows larger.

Although I prefer using Maya especially for creation I often find myself using 3Ds Max for rendering and UV mapping and exporting and such. Anyway still a great idea to have them both I am sure though using one you could learn how to do it all but I am horrible and have bad memory so I can only remember how to use a program for so many things LOL~~~
GL though dude~

Good luck for you. My computer with Maya died on me, and I lost the disc x_x
I however, love Lightwave for modelling and rendering. It's faster than 3DS at rendering, and it's what my uncle let me use on his AMIGA machines when I was 7 =D

I highly recommend Torque, it's a great engine from what I've seen for freeware projects. One other Star Fox fan game tried to use it, never got very far but what progress they made was impressive.

Why would you want Maya and 3DS? What are the major differences between the two?
(I only have 3DS by the way)
