That's rather strange. What message does it give you exactly?

If your using a recent 3.6.10 build then you shouldn't need to put anything in your data directory. There was something for older builds but anything from the last month or so should be fine without it. If it's a multi.cfg or fs2open_pxo.cfg then you might be better off renaming the ones you have. 3.6.10 should work just fine without them.
Note I'm not 100% positive on this being correct for a Mac.

it says 'the file 'blah blah blah' cannot be copied because 'data' cannot be modified.
so i guess i already have the file but in free space it says 'connection failed' but i'm connected to the internet and when i go into multipleyer it finds no games, i'm pretty sure it used to say something else

Did you set the options in the launcher under the network tab? If so and you have DSL try dial up just for the heck of it.
Wait you're getting data cannot be modified? That shouldn't be possible if FS2 isn't already running. Try rebooting or at least checking for a running FS2 in task manager.

You won't have a network tab on a mac. Only PCs have the launcher. Not exactly certain how Mac users are meant to set things up to be honest.
