EGOSOFT today announces the beginning of a new era for the X series of space combat/trading games. The planned expansion for the award winning PC CDROM title, X²: THE THREAT known as X²: THE RETURN has been cancelled. Quarter three 2005 will herald the launch of the ‘next generation’ of X game, in the form of X³: REUNION, the first multi format product, set in the X universe.

Godangit!! Geez louise, Ive been waiting patiently for so long and now its scrapped.

But there is some good news, i guess......

X³: REUNION immerses the player into the most realistic, living universe, ever experienced. Extensive development has gone into the X³ engine, making full use of DirectX 9 technology, to create dramatic visual effects and stunningly realistic starships. The economy model in X³: REUNION is more complex than any previous X game. Coupled with the massively enhanced A.L. (Artificial Life) system, X³: REUNION will present players with an ever changing, evolving universe; where a player’s actions really can shape the future of the universe. Community involvement has been extensive, throughout the development process and the launch of X³: REUNION will see many innovative fan creations in the final retail game.

X³: REUNION will also be the first chance for players to experience the thrills of deep space trading on a format other than PC, with the launch of a console version (TBA). Technical details on the enormity of X³: REUNION will be released in coming weeks.

“X³: REUNION will see another huge leap in the evolution of space trading games” said Bernd Lehahn, CEO EGOSOFT. “The decision to bring X³ forward, allows for many community ideas to be implemented. X² set a bench mark to be beaten. X³: REUNION will surpass this in every way possible.”

Lightspeed say: "X2 is crap."

I haven't played it personally, but I do weigh his opinion greater than most.

Lightspeed said it sucks.

I saw screenshots.

I agreed.

I played it. The graphics had some hights an lows, but I think it looks pretty good.

It lacks the 'real' feeling while flying, but it has some other cool features.
You're pretty free do what you like. I bought (yeah cheat...) a heavy cruiser and some fighters. It was really fun to have my on squad fighting pirates, while I command the cruiser. Well, I could also launch my fighter too and help them out a bit. :)

I like this part very much. But after a while there is no reason left to play anymore. The story was rather bad IMHO.

So it's no "must have", but a "should try". ;)

X2 was a great game if it wasn´t for the lame combat settings and extensive key settings that you couldn´t even change. But if they hear out the public and adress these issues, i would expect the sequel to be good stuff indeed.

Yea, it was an excellent game once you learned all of the hotkeys. The waay in which u used the keyboard is reminiscent of the old DOS games I used to play.

Its just my kind of strategy game though. Buy, sell, deal, trick, smuggle and fight. The game had enormous flexibility with over like 250 sectors.

I just wish there was some sort of multiplayer where you could run a server and control your universe along with some friends that way.......

WOoo! Next-gen console game...

Well could explain why they scrapped X2-return, they did get Xenons dev kits and saw how powerful nextgen consoles really are. And then there is XNA (When developing Xbox2 game it's very easy converting to pc and other way

and then there is this game release date end of this year which could mean that they want to be Xbox360 launch tittle

I'd much prefer they make X3 and take a shot at making a game that doesn't suck, than making an expansion for a terrible game. X2 had potential, but failed pretty badly. Also its story was awful. I just hope they put a decent story in this time.

I was personally pretty relieved when I heard this.

And a story that takes more than half a dozen missions to unfold. Fortunally i had read the story was miserably short, so i left the campaign missions to the very last, while i built my empire.
The best feeling i had in the game was capturing a Khaak ship with all 3 unknown devices, each worth over 2 million credits.
