Well I re-installed FS1 because I just got FS2 and I wanna freshen up on the story and gameplay before I play the new one.
So I figure I'll patch it before I play it too. So I patch it to 1.06. Works fine. Now I go to play and everything is hunky dory... until I realize... my afterburners dont work. Any ideas? The hud graphics for the afterburner bar look a bit wrong too.

Been a while since I've heard of this one. :)
You might want to try FS2_Open (http://scp.indiegames.us/screenshots.php) instead as that also solves the problem.

Actually... this works if I have the problem with FS1 right? Because I'm not talking about FS2.

The solution in my FAQ should work for both. Using FS2_Open allows you to play FS1 if you download the Freespace port (with hugely improved graphics too).
So you can try either solution really.

Thanks man. As soon as I figure out how to do what you just said I should be good. Heh.

Lol Okay, running it in Windows 95 compatibility works... but now my mouse is choppy. I tried using 2000 compatibility and that lets the mouse work fine but doesnt fix the afterburner glitch. *le sigh* I tried all the other compatibilities too.

Hmmm. That one is a new one on me. Not entirely sure what to suggest then apart from trying FS2_Open and the port (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html).

Meh... whatever, I'll just play FS2 its not like I NEED to replay FS1 first. Thanks for the info though. I dont know what you mean about the FS2_Open and the port though, so Im not gunna try that.

FS2_Open is what the community made after getting hold of the FS2 source code. Basically a massive graphics upgrade to the game.
I dont know what you mean about the FS2_Open and the port though, so Im not gunna try that.
I didn't know what FSO and FSPort were, but I still tried them. And life couldn't be better.
Installation instructions for FSO are here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47640.0.html). FSPort and installation instructions for it are here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58357.0.html). Questions? Ask.

Which one do I install first...?
FreeSpaceF

Doesn't matter. FSO is the game itself, FSPort refers to the game files that let you play FS1.

Install FS2 first. Then either FS2_Open, Then the port.
It doesn't actually matter which way round to be honest but when installing the port you should follow the instructions for FS2_Open and not the ones for FS2 regardless of the order.

So if I want this to work I have to install FS2 as well. Sorry if Im asking dumb questions.

Yeah. It's an add on.
I would usually suggest Turey's Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) but some people have been having trouble with it corrupting the files it downloads recently.
It's well worth giving FS2_Open a try because it doesn't prevent you from playing FS2 in any way. Run Freespace2.exe for retail and launcher.exe for FS2_Open.

Gah I give up. Afterburners dont work in FS2 either, so I cant play that to my satisfaction, installed FS_Open but it gives me an error message when I try to run it. Something about an "OpenGL" something. Which I take to mean that my graphics card sucks ass?
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html
If that doesn't help, please provide more information. We can often (or practically always) solve any FreeSpace-related problems, but we need a bit more information than just "something about OpenGL".

My bet is that it was an error with OpenAL not OpenGL.
In which case simply installing the OpenAL Installer for Windows (http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx) would solve it.
