Hello again, everybody! (Hehe)

Um, I was wanting to ask a few questions, and I can't seem to find them anywhere else. Unless they're "confidential". ;)

1. I was wondering what program(s) the SOL team uses for their textures?

2. And what program(s) do you use for the modeling?

3. I came across an old topic from 2006 on Arwing Landing's forums, and saw that DaBrain had given a model to texture to show that the person could come on the team or something? I'm just wondering if SOL still needs modelers and/or texture-ers? Because I'm pretty good IMO, and you can see my work here: Clicky (http://arwinglanding.net/forum/index.php?topic=14122.0)

Unless the first 2 are "confidential" like I said above.
Thanks!
Icy

I have absolutely no credibility and have nothing to do with the team, but I'd assume they'd use Blender for modeling. If only because EVERYONE uses blender.

I can't talk for the team but 3DS Max is about as commonly used in the community as Blender.

Yeah, I thought Blender. I'm not too familiar with it, I use Anim8or which is a tad bit inferior to Blender. But I use it for other things, such as decimating and other tools that Blender offers.

I don't have 3ds Max, but I have Gmax and can convert the models that I make to popular formats probably used in the community. But anyways, thanks for the replies. I hope I can join the team. This sounds fun, but then again, maybe they don't need more people any more?

None the less,
Thanks!

I use Maya 6, 3D max is often used by the other team members. I believe Axem started out modeling on Wings3D which is a free program. I tried using Blender before but found it to be a pain to use. As for the textures DaBrain uses Photo Shop. I don't know if any of the other team members use any other programs for that. Photo Shop is a very expensive program and thus heavily pirated leading Adobe to use some insane DRMs to try and stop it. GIMP is a free program to use but it is not a 1-to-1 replacement for Photo Shop.

Yeah, I have Wings3D. Never got interested in it, though. Because it is basically another person's version of Anim8or. In fact, I believe Anim8or is superior to it. :cool1:

Also, I meant what program do they use to unwrap the models to get a UV map of them. Not what paint program they use. ;)

I wish I had 3ds Max... It's close to $2000, though... :| Except I have Gmax like I mentioned earlier. Gmax is 3ds max, just without a render tool and normal exporter, right?

1 and 2 have been pretty much answered already.

Keep in mind that even an old copy of Photoshop 6 enough for texturing. You'll miss a few things, but you can very well work with that version.
There is also GimpShop and Paint.Net, if you don't like the Gimp interface.

Learning Blender is a smart thing to do. With Blender 2.5, the usability really improved.
You'll still have to wait a while for 2.5, but it should be worth the waiting.
As for 3ds Max... older versions are still fine. Max 7 is still good enough for modding. You don't "need" any newer version.
Yeah, Gmax is just the modeling part of Max.
It's hard to get a usable format out of it and was actually only intended to be used for a few games (/engines/model formats).

On the other hand Wings3d is very easy to learn. It might lack some features, but is still a pretty powerful and very fast modeling tool.

3. Nice stuff, but I think you still need to improve a little bit to be part of the team. :)

Thanks for all that info.

And I thought I'd have to improve, also. But thanks anyway! Hmm.. Maybe I'll try out Blender 2.5 when it comes out. Sounds much better than the older ones. FYI, I have Photoshop 7.
