Anybody else do 3d art for fun? Game related or non, post it here. I thought we needed a thread for just the 3d stuff, so here it is. Here is one of my current projects. I made this ship in bryce. Tell me what you think, and show your own projects.

Is that ALL bryce? if so, you pay too much attention to precal.
You've seen my stuff.
I make mine with DOGACGA, a lazy man's 3d modeller. ;) Basically you have lots of preset parts then put them together sorta like lego bricks.
The models are only good for renders, they would have to be really cleaned up for use in games.
Anyhow, these are for my own little sci-fi universe. These ships are early FTL era ships.

I like the ships. How much is premade and how much did you design? I might have to have a look at that modeler.
Here's a screen from the Insert Parts Window. It gives you an idea how much is prefabed. Basically all you can do is place the parts, move them, scale them, and rotate them. So its good for simple models, nice for concept art too.

I was begging for something like this over a year ago. For modlers to band together and make some sort of parts library for us noobs or non-modlers and to have hundreds (if not thousands) of permutations on themes or maybe one part that catches our eye... I figgen LOVE THIS!
I spent about 2-3 hours tracking this program down (from your post) and learning how to work it and then more importantly how to EXPORT to a format I can convert to pof!
Guess what it converted! Now to test it in game... I give you the Drake Class medium fighter (for a ,as of yet, unnamed race...). The wyvern (light scout), and Heavy fighter (no naem yet) varients to come soon! He he..

Yes I have that question also, can we make Custom parts and get them into DOGCA? That would mean we need to make them oriented a certain way and them sized and also converted to .sur format somehow...
My god... If we can start securing permissions from some of our modlers in the HLP community think of the combinations? Noobs and elites alike could start making campaigns a little faster as well as try designs never seen before (even though ceratin parts may have been used before for different purposes. The way it is used and textures on it will make all the difference! Like a bridge here is a cockpit there, a wing a main body , or vice versa...) I used a ship body as the two missile launchers near the head for example and then mirrored it. I am NOT a modler at all and get totally lost and frustrated with 3d programs but this is like the ultimate 3d Christmas present I could ever hope for!
If I am getting too excited over nothing let me know... :D
[NOTE} Those textures are temp place holders, if it works in game I will go back and make it look alive... Pheer the Draconian Empire lol!

Man, that program would be nice. It takes me hours to make a single turret in TS and even longer to skin it. That program, if it works right is a HUGE BOMBSHELL, totally changes the way us Modders mod.

I got the drake in game (looks fine but defiantely needs to have a texture scheme planned out) , However blowing one up causes crash.
Model needs to have all those intercecting poly's removed I bet as well as other stuff I don't know about probably... So in the end a "real modler" has to look at it and "clean the mesh up" but hey it still would be a huge helper to the unskilled folks!
Maybe later on as people start making alternate designs out of parts some of the skilled people might like them enough to make them game compatible?
At least now I can make close approimations to what I think a model should look like along certain themes (I noticed they had a small Trek assortment in there not readily noticeable to teh uninitiated , like that Miranda roll bar...)
I'm not exactly sure what it will import, I think its dxf files. There's also some converter that will convert from dxf to whatever it uses as parts files. To use it within the program you'll need to make a bmp of it and add it to some ini. I'm just taking wild guesses at some of this right now so don't hold me on it. :p

HERE Doga-1 is free the other builds (Doga 2adn 3) are shareware but probably work without higher functions unless you pay... For rendering movies and stuff...

Yeah, I use L3. It just doesn't come with a special renderer, but you can still render from within the program. But that's fine by me. :biggrin1: I just like playing around with everything.

Oh an BTW I always wanted to make a ship very much like ths but aside from hand drawing I never dreamed I could get it to PC myself... Behold, the EDF Avenger! (A WIP) now to figure out how to change the scale to fine grid and use it correctly so the parts line up right and don't get sunk into each other too far (like what happened with the turrets!) he he.
Man this was fun to build, now I just need to add engines, secondary guns, torpedo tubes, and point defense ports. those parts weren't pre-mapped so it's blank but oh well better than not having anything at all! :)

Anyhow, here's two more I made. They're older and were lost when my hard drive died. Luckily I had some of them pics on my old site. Top one is an enemy race bent on killing the Terrans, the bottom one is a race who like to stay secluded until the end of time.

Both, actually. DoGA does hte UV Mapping on it's on, only requiring to choose and apply different combinations of textures/effects, how tiled they are and different specular/env effects on it as well. L3 is a pretty damn usefull tool, for sure!

Like the cap-ship, looks like it could be Shivan, or part shivan, part vasudan, and part terran. Maybe of some alien race that builds it's ships out of parts they find.

Why? Why can't a model that's been put into pof form be considerred art?
What makes this any different from anything else posted in here that could be put in game? Because it's textured and in an almost finished state?
I put alot of time and effort into it, and I think it's art. If I didn't I sure as **** wouldn't have made it. Because I don't even play freespace anymore. :hoppingma

Anywho, still playing around with the weird alien capital ship. Got rid of the tail, added real engines, made the wings protrude forward, made a better building on the head, lessened smoothing a ton.

wtf is up with the middle? it looks fuzzy, i would suggest, if youre doing the layered armor thing, have 3 or 4 instead of 20, it'd look more deliberate and fit better with the front and back. I like the spikes at the back of the front part, its cool

It's mostly cause TS 3.2 does fuzzy renders. From close up, it looks alot better. And those spikes at the lower back of the front, are engines.Here is a pic, showing that the armor is anything but fuzzy, it also shows the front engines. It's the polys that is the problem.

I managed to dig up the first fighter I ever made using 3dsmax 2.5. I've been dying to get back to finishing her. Those were the days I was still using lofts, bevels, and extrudes. I'm gonna rework the mesh with splines and nurbs this time around.

It was a Shivan juggernaut, kind of funny how everyone wants to build those when they first start modelling. I really liked the design tho, and have made alot of changes in my mind, for when I remake it, once I get better modelling skills, that is.:lol:
Everybody loves turrets! Inspired by Naval type gun turrets. Not really for FS2, unless you want a ship full of 800 poly turrets. :p

This one still needs a bridge and other details.
The broadside cannons retract when not in use. The first pic shows the side with them retracted, and the second shows them out and ready to blast things into oblivion.

I'm gradually putting together a universe in which I intend to write a novel, and I've been after a basic design for hostile ships... you've got a very nice basic concept here - mind if I scab a tad?
I guess so. It was for my own little universe, but I wasn't that happy with how the ship came out in the end.

It wont be a direct copy. More of a basic shape. But if/when I post anything I make for them up here, I'm bound to get at least a few people going "Hey! That kind of looks like that thing Axem made", so I'd rather get any possible inspiration clarified from the beginning.
I'd be surprised if people actually recognized my work. ;)
What I was hinting at anyway, is that that ship probably won't see any final form in the end.
The other one on the other hand is going well. I just need to add some AAA guns, clean up the mesh, and hopefully UV map the beast. The turrets so far are already mapped.
First pic has every doodad extended, and the second has everything retracted.

A Mini-Triton like thing. Lots of points of articulation on the hauler's arms. The main body of the hauler still needs quite a bit of work, I just got tired of 4 hours of modelling this thing.

Axem, just curious, how many polys are those top dual turrets? I like that style, most of the time peopel make bases too boxy but you got that terrestrial Naval look.
Those turrets are 328 polys. They're a little high right now. They have 8 sided barrels, I'm going to degrade them to 6 sided before it comes into FS2. The base itself has 144 polys.

Raynor eh, I know of it, but don't have a good permenant picture of it. Although a search of HLP did turn up some stuff. I sorta see the resemblance to it.
Anyway, now with turrets! This ship is meant for long range combat, the two large intake things are actually housings for long range torpedo launchers. It doesn't have many turrets (Only around 15 compared to the ~25 of the other one), and they're all single barrelled. I still need to add on a few AAA guns though, although there would only be around 3 or 4 of those.

Also, it's a very simple shape with a ton of bevelling.
The greebling was very basic. I didn't like it and removed it soon after. It doesn't look right if all you do is inset, extrude and bevel.

Someone try and make the Warhammer40k battleships. They have heaps of greebles and tiny details.
Star Dragon: Thunderbird 1? More like Thunderbird 2 if anything (Oooh, which gives me ideas to model).
But you'll probably see the model in game... never. It's for a completely different universe than FreeSpace that I doubt I could get off the ground. It's just for me I suppose.

Very nice revival looks like a viper that got sucked into a black hole with the Blackbird. ^_^

Heres my first ever peice of work, The Y-wing from Star Wars. pretty simple as most of it is straight and blocky
havent had time to really get into model making, and its nothing compared to the fine peices of work ive seen as far. It was done in 3ds MAX 8, but ive since had to downgrade to MAX 7 :(

Looks a bit like Truespace to me... but it's kinda hard to guess. Most 3d packages could create a similar picture.
