I played a bit around with the Alpha channel. I don't know if it has any effect at all, but it might look better.

Hmm, could you possibly do up the lightning bolt texture as well? It now looks a little bit tired compared to the rest of the scene. :D

The mapping coordinates are weird...

Well, the gradients much better, but it looks like lightning has the same problem as contrails. That is, the game only uses the first sliver of the pixels on the bitmap, and here it looks like it's doing additional weird things. :\
Yeah, see if a coder can help, cause if it is like the contrail bug, then there's nothing more you can do. :(
