Exclamation Shadows of Lylat is looking for a texture artist!(not anymore)

We need another texture artist asap. Ever since the started, I've been the only texture artist in the team.

More and more modellers joined the team and some members started to learn modelling too.

To keep up with the modelling progress we need to find another texture artist.

Requirements:

Interest in texturing
2d art skills. Drawing, or even actual textuing experience would be great.
Basic knowledge of a graphic software (Photoshop, Corel Draw, Paintshop Pro, The Gimp, Paint.net, whatever...) Working with a few layers will be very useful for shine and glow map creation

What's not necessary:
You won't need modelling skills
Or UV mapping skills (we got models that are UV mapped already)
You don't even have to know StarFox and/or Freespace 2 (Some members never played a StarFox game before.)
You also don't need any technical knowledge about texture compression, shine and glow map creation, or anything else that is game engine related. It's actually pretty simple and I'd be glad to explain it you.

I've quickly created a model and UV mapped it. If you're interested, please texture this model and upload either your texture, or a rendered picture of the model together with your texture. The model and the texture will probably make it into the game. (Even though the model isn't very good. ) It's kinda a test...

Actually the UV map isn't very good, but it has a simple layout, which should make it easier to texture.

And this is how the original looks like:

You can download the needed files here:
Download (800 KB)

The uv mapped model (*.3ds)
UV map (*.tga)
A colored UV map
Colored views of the model

Yeah, the Game-Warden FTP is still down.

It's attached in the thread at HLP. (My first two postings.)

Since you have made a start using Blender - just use that.

Import the model File->import->3d studio

Then you need to split the main view into two windows. Move cursor up to near top of main window - until it turns into a double arrow. Select "split window"

Change the main window (Left-hand) from Edit or Object mode to UV Face Select. hit A to select all faces.

Change the leftmost icon of the Right-hand window to UV/Image Editor
Click on Image (text) (RH window) and load the image map.

When you make a change to the image file using your paint program- you will need to go (image) (reload)

There is an updated model with improved uvmapping available if needed. Although being able to fix/alter UV maps is a big bonus to a texturer.

Sorry - forgot to mention, you do all your texture work in the paint program. Just use blender as a model viewer. There is other stuff you can do with it but you will have your hands full.

Addition to previous post

Little orange box icon next to Edit/Object/UV mode - change it to textured. Or you won't see the texture map.

Actually, we've more people that UV map their models, than texture artists. So you might just get complete UV map an just have to paint in that.

If you're interested in that in that, I can quickly put together a test model.

Lithium Unwrap (also freeware) is also a quite nice texture preview program. So you can see what you're doing.

I've been using it for this job a long time.

lithium unwrap? that could help, since b;ender and truespace say stuff like "python script error: check console" and "3d studio set file needed:cannot load teture maps"

ps: which one is the map? jpg or TGA? (yes im new to these programs...used dark basic for to long XP)

The TGA is the actual map you should use for texturing. The JPGs are colored, so you can see which part is where.

So you don't have to work 'blind'.

Not knowing what you can do in blender would make writing a tutorial very hard.
Have you created a model that you want to unwrap? If so post it in the Freelance modeling thread. Or do you want to be able to unwrap the fighter in this thread? I would need to know where your at so that I can get useful info to you.
